Apple Pay Fails to Get Popular among iPhone 6 Owners

apple payAccording to the results of a survey jointly conducted by InfoScout, an analytics firm, and Pymnts.com, a payments news portal, over one-third of iPhone 6 users do not know how to use Apple Pay, a new payment system developed by Apple.

The results show that only 3% of Apple iPhone 6 users regularly use the payment system to make purchases and that over one-third of Apple users are unaware of how to use the payment system.

This makes one wonder if Apple Pay, which was released last month in the UK, will ever become a success.

InfoScout and Pymnts.com surveyed 1,498 people who use iPhone 6 in order to prepare their third report on the new payment system. Their survey shows that only 13.1% Apple users said in June that they used Apple Pay, which is less than the 51.1% who said they did in March. While 39.3% users said that they used Apple Pay in March, only 23% said that they used Apple Pay in June.

Pymnts.com Chief Executive Officer Karen Webster said:

The results are pretty clear … Apple Pay has not become a regular habit for users who have the application and are able to use it in stores that accept it.

One-third of those surveyed said that they did use Apple Pay because they were comfortable using cash or credit/debit cards and do not want to change to a new system. However, what worries Apple the most is that nearly 34% said that they had no idea how Apple Pay works.

Apple Pay is available not only at 250,000 stores across UK, but also in several other countries. It makes use of communication chips incorporated within the iPhone 6 to help users pay for products and services. The user only has to hold his/her device close to a card reader.

Apple Pay is also compatible with the Apple Watch, a new product that is struggling to get noticed. Slice Intelligence says that not more than 20,000 Apple Watches are sold in the US per day as compared to the 200,000 watches that were sold in April.

Apple has not yet released sales numbers related to its smartwatch, but has stated that consumers have responded to the new product in ways that have surpassed the company’s expectations.

InfoScout Chief Executive Officer Jared Schrieber said:

The results of the survey also show that very few people are actually buying an iPhone to gain access to Apple Pay
